Markets Are the Heartbeat of Phnom Penh
In Cambodia, markets are not just places to shop — they are social spaces, community hubs, and windows into daily life. Every neighbourhood has its market, and every market has its own character, rhythm, and specialities.
If you want to understand Phnom Penh, spend time in its markets. Here's where to go.
────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────
Central Market (Phsar Thmei)
The most iconic market in Phnom Penh, housed in a magnificent art deco building constructed in 1937. The central dome and four radiating wings are one of the city's most beautiful architectural landmarks.
What you'll find:
Gold and silver jewellery
Watches and electronics
Clothing and textiles
Souvenirs and local crafts
Fresh food and street snacks
Tip: The jewellery section has some excellent deals on locally made silver pieces. Bargaining is expected and normal.
Location: Central Phnom Penh, near the riverfront | Open daily from 6:00 AM to 6:00 PM
────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────
Russian Market (Phsar Tuol Tom Poung)
Known as the "Russian Market" because Russian expats used to shop here in the 1980s, this is now the most popular market with tourists and locals alike. Labyrinthine, packed, and fascinating.
What you'll find:
Factory-outlet clothing from major brands (genuine overruns from local factories)
Silk scarves and textiles
Handmade jewellery
Buddha statues and religious items
Antiques and vintage items
Fresh food, coffee, and street food
Tip: Go in the morning before it gets too hot. The food section in the back is excellent for breakfast.
Location: Tuol Tom Poung, southern Phnom Penh | Open daily from 6:30 AM to 5:00 PM
────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────
Night Market (Phsar Reatrey)
Every Friday, Saturday, and Sunday evening along the riverfront, the Night Market comes to life. Stalls stretch for hundreds of metres along the Mekong, selling crafts, clothing, food, and everything in between.
What you'll find:
Local handicrafts and souvenirs
Street food (grilled meats, fresh fruit, noodles, desserts)
Live music and entertainment
Clothing and accessories
Tip: The food section is the highlight — try the grilled corn, fresh mango with sticky rice, and the various Khmer desserts.
Location: Sisowath Quay (riverside) | Open Friday-Sunday evenings from 5:00 PM
────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────
Olympic Market (Phsar Olympic)
One of the city's largest and most authentic local markets — mostly frequented by Phnom Penh residents rather than tourists. An excellent place to experience the real pulse of the city.
What you'll find:
Fresh produce, meat, and fish
Wholesale clothing
Household goods and electronics
Local food stalls
Tip: Go early morning for the freshest produce and the most vibrant atmosphere.
────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────
Orussey Market (Phsar Orussey)
A multi-storey market in central Phnom Penh, popular with locals for wholesale shopping. Less touristy, more authentic. The fabric section on the upper floors is excellent for silk and traditional Cambodian textiles.
